JULIUS CAESAR. AR Denarius (3.93 gms), Military mint traveling with Caesar in North Africa, ca. 48-47 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5.
Cr-458/1; CRI-55; Syd-1013; RSC-12. Obverse: Diademed head of Venus right; Reverse: Aeneas advancing left, holding palladium and bearing Anchises on shoulder. A wonderfully attractive example of this type that celebrates both Caesar's mythological lineage and the founding myth of Rome itself. This piece offers a nice strike on a flan of good metal quality. While the obverse is slightly off-center, the reverse is attractively placed to display Caesar's full cognomen and is quite lustrous and colorfully toned.
