GALBA, A.D. 68-69. AR Denarius (3.09 gms), Rome Mint. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5. Test Punch.
RIC-186; RSC-55. Obverse: Laureate head right; Reverse: Diva Julia Augusta (Livia) standing left, holding patera and scepter. This gorgeous Denarius features an expressive portrait of the elderly ruler, the first in the "Year of Four Emperors". Accentuated by deep cabinet toning, the surfaces display an elegant underlying luster. The well-struck details are sharp and fresh. A nearly imperceptible test punch is noted at the lower obverse rim, but it does not diminish the coin's considerable eye appeal. This choice example is suitable for an advanced "Twelve Caesars" collection.
Estimate: $600 - $900
