THEODOSIUS II, A.D. 402-450. AV Solidus (4.40 gms), Constantinople Mint, 2nd Officina, ca. A.D. 430-440. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Edge Marks.
RIC-257. Obverse: Pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and with a shield over his left shoulder; Reverse: Constantinopolis seated left, holding globus cruciger in her right hand and scepter in her left; shield at her side; in field to left, star. A beautiful Solidus from the twilight of the Roman Empire. Both the portrait of the emperor and the seated personification of Constantinople are rendered here with intricate detail and a sharp strike. Only minor bumps can be spotted on the still-lustrous fields, and the noted edge marks are limited to one side and difficult to spot. An impressive gold piece with terrific originality.
Estimate: $600 - $900
