CONSTANTINE VI and IRENE, with LEO III, CONSTANTINE V, and LEO IV, 780-797. AV Solidus (4.38 gms), Constantinople Mint, 790-792. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
S-1591. Obverse: Constantine V, Leo III, and Leo IV seated facing, each crowned and wearing chlamys; Reverse: Facing busts of Constantine VI, crowned and wearing chlamys and holding globus cruciger, and Irene, crowned and wearing loros, holding cruciform scepter; pellet between; cross above. A beautiful example of this SCARCE dynastic type. Struck from fresh dies and barely circulated, the coin displays all of its intricate details with sharp precision. Parts of the legends are off-flan, but all five busts appear with impressive clarity. The surfaces shimmer with luster and are free from any distracting graffiti or scratches. A wonderful opportunity to acquire portraits of the entire Isaurian Dynasty, including the infamous empress Irene, all in a single coin.

Ex: Historical Scholar Collection.

Estimate: $2000 - $3000
