MICHAEL VII, 1071-1078. EL Histamenon Nomisma (4.27 gms), Constantinople Mint. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 1/5. Plugged.
S-1868. Obverse: Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator; Reverse: Crowned facing bust of Michael, holding labarum and globus cruciger; pellet on shaft. This debased gold piece exhibits a forceful strike, resulting in a severe portrait of the young emperor. Displaying a golden luster and slight tone, this example offers more eye appeal and originality than its surface designation implies. The noted plug can be spotted at around 1 o'clock on the obverse, though it was skillfully done and is easy to miss as a result.

Ex: Christie's New York (05/1984), Lot # 552.

Estimate: $250 - $400
