JOHN II, 1118-1143. AV Hyperpyron (4.38 gms), Constantinople Mint, 1118-1122. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Graffito, Die Shift, Wrinkled.
S-1938. Obverse: Christ Pantokrator seated facing on throne; Reverse: Half-length facing busts of John and the Virgin Mary, holding long patriarchal cross between them; manus Dei above. A lovely late Byzantine gold piece struck on a broad flan. While the obverse suffers from die shift, the reverse displays crisp original detail with portraits of the emperor and the Theotokos. The noted graffito is only on the rim of obverse, and is thus not a distraction. An attractive example with very limited handling.
