BRAZIL. 960 Reis, 1816-B. Bahia Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC MS-64.
KM-307.1; LDMB-401; Gomes-31.10. Overstruck on uncertain Spanish colonial bust 8 Reales of Charles IV, dated 1808(?). An impressive near-Gem, this Brazilian crown features satisfyingly crisp details. The surfaces are deeply toned to charcoal gray with lovely hints of iridescent color that shimmer over the lustrous fields. Much of the undertype is visible under magnification, though the crucial mintmark and assayers were too thoroughly overstruck to attribute. Uncompromisingly original and eminently appealing, this piece will excite any collector of the Brazilian series.
Estimate: $300 - $500
