BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. Tortola - Spanish Colonial. 2 Shillings (1/4 Dollar), ND (1801). George III. PCGS POOR-01.
KM-6; Prid-3. Weight: 5.90 gms. Authorized by local Act of 3 February 1801. Countermark: Type I, TORTOLA within shaped indent. Applied to a cut 1/4 bust 8 Reales of Charles III or Charles IV. Despite some extensive circulation on the host coin, this piece displays a bold countermark, with fully legible "TORTOLA", a most unusual occurrence. A piece that is certain to receive much attention given the strength of the countermark.
