GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Bolivia. 8 Reales, ND (1839). PCGS Genuine--Plugged, VF Details; Countermark: VF Details.
KM-96.2. Type II countermark: radiant sun over mountains. Applied to the obverse of a Bolivian 1672-P E Cob 8 Reales of Charles II (KM-26). Weight: 25.42 gms. A beautiful example of this countermark issue. The Bolivian host coin is impressively well-preserved, displaying two mintmarks, the assayer's initial, and two bold dates. Much of the peripheral legends also appear, including parts of "Potosi" and the monarch's name. The Guatemalan countermark was struck forcefully, displaying clear detail despite the typical die wear. The surfaces exhibit a light warm gray tone and are free from any excessive wear or damage aside from the noted plug at about 2 o'clock. A lovely survivor, especially considering the span of over 160 years between the minting of the host coin and the application of the counterstamp.
Estimate: $400 - $600
