GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Guatemala. 8 Reales, ND (1839). PCGS Genuine--Holed, VG Details; Countermark: VF Details.
KM-102. Type II countermark: radiant sun over mountains. Applied to the obverse of a Guatemala 17(XX)-G J Cob 8 Reales (KM-12). Weight: 26.32 gms. Slightly muddled but boldly struck, this Central American Republic countermark is applied to an earlier colonial Guatemalan issue. The host is well-worn, but offers smooth surfaces with pleasing light gray toning. While the final two digits of the date are missing due to the parallelogram-shaped planchet, features like the crowned globes and assayer's initial remain clear. An unobtrusive hole is noted at one corner. This eye-catching example is not lacking in historical intrigue or visual appeal.
Estimate: $300 - $500
