CANADA. Fenian Raid Silver Award Medal, "1866" (Authorized 1899). UNCIRCULATED.
MY-125i. 37mm (for medal). Engraved and awarded to George E. Savage. Obverse: Crowned, veiled, and draped bust of Victoria left; Reverse: Canadian Red Ensign within wreath of maple leaves. Edge: "Pte. G. E. Savage, 1st Granby I. Co.". Original swiveling hanger attached at the top, with clasp reading "FENIAN RAID 1866". Ribbon: Central cream-white band surrounded by red band to either side. Quite attractively toned and iridescent.

Authorized in 1899 for an event that occurred 30 years earlier, the Fenian Raid was a failed attempt by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, composed largely of veterans of the American Civil War, to seize Canada and exchange the Dominion for Irish freedom.
