FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1690-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XIV. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned.
Fr-429; KM-278.3; Gad-250; Dupl-1435A; Ciani-1797; Droulers-343; DFW-243. Struck from the same dies as a PCGS MS-63 example we sold in our August 2021 ANA Auction for $4,320 including buyer's premium. Although "flan reformé," only the slightest vestige of the undertype remains within the legends, difficult to detect even with a loupe. The strike is sharp to full, filling out every detail in the Sun King's portrait, while traces of a wipe account for the designation. Nonetheless, this is a bright, honey-gold piece with an unobtrusive cleaning that is bound to be hotly contested by French gold specialists.
The French regime began the insidious practice of "reforming" the coinage in 1690 and would do so repeatedly until 1704. Each time a reform was announced, a tax was collected on holders of the older coinage before it could be reminted into the new.
Estimate: $800 - $1200
