Obverse: Bust of Louis XIV right, perimeter legend; Reverse: Pallas advancing between the recoiling Rhine and the Po, holding in each hand an escutcheon bearing the arms of Strasbourg and the arms of Casale, perimeter legend above, legend in exergue below. Control of strategic positions and waterways were key to Louis XIV's territorial expansion plans; on 30 September 1681 his troops seized Strasbourg and simultaneously occupied Casale by way of a treaty with Duke Charles III of Mantua.
