FRANCE. Henri d'Artois, Future Bourbon Pretender to the Throne, Bronze Medal, 1820. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
By Raymond Gayrard. 37mm. Obverse: Infant Henri being held aloft by his reclining mother, Princess Caroline of Naples, rays emanating from heaven above, perimeter legend, legend in exergue below; Reverse: St. Michael, standing, sword in right hand, defeating the devil which lays prone at his feet, perimeter legend. A medal providing a window into a fascinating chapter of French history; Henri's father, the Duc of Berry, was the last claimant to the House of Bourbon line but was assassinated in early 1820. His wife, Princess Caroline, was however, 2 months pregnant. The birth of Henri provided a new heir and hope for monarchists which was ultimately never to be fulfilled. Henri left a legacy of many medals and pattern coinage over the course of his life. To view all items from the PHG Collection click here.
