Obverse: Bust of Burdigala (Bordeaux), facing left, with ship and grapes in her hair; Arms to right, reclining female pouring jug of wine in exergue, perimeter legend at left; Reverse: Partially-clad female, sitting, facing right, with tablet and stylus, cityscape in the background above, blank escutcheon below. The Philomathic Society of Bordeaux was formed in 1808 with the aim of "the promotion of knowledge, the dissemination of culture and the popularization of science and technology" and still exists today.
