MONTENEGRO. Cattaro. 5 Francs, 1813. Napoleon I. NGC MS-62.
Dav-46; KM-2. This enchanting cast piece features crisp incuse designs and glossy brown surfaces. Hastily produced as an emergency issue during the siege of Cattaro, its crude manufacture attests to the urgency and desperation of the Napoleonic forces. The coin's legends and devices are unusually descriptive, stating in French on one side "GOD PROTECT FRANCE" and "CATTARO IN STATE OF SIEGE" on the other. In the center, the crowned "N" represents Napoleon Bonaparte himself. This fascinating type is seldom encountered in such wholesome condition, offering exquisite originality along with its historical intrigue.

Cattaro, (now known as Kotor) was an important seaport in Montenegro that came under the jurisdiction of the Napoleonic Empire in 1807. In October 1813, a force of Montenegrins with the aid of the British fleet laid siege to the city. The siege lasted until the early days of January 1814 when the French capitulated.

Estimate: $3000 - $5000
