PORTUGAL. 250 Reis, ND (1663). Lisbon Mint. Alfonso VI. NGC AU Details--Graffiti; Countermark: AU Standard.
KM-434.1; Gomes-42.02. Type III countermark on Portugal 200 Reis of Joao IV (KM-49). The boldly struck host retains a pleasing originality amid its smoky gray tone. One flan flaw is observed at the rim, and a small graffito at the base of the cross accounts for the designation. The countermark, intended to adjust the coin's nominal value, is quite distinct despite minor unevenness. An overall quite charming example of the issue.
Estimate: $200 - $300
