UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. St. Louis. Louisiana Purchase Exposition/World's Fair Bronze Medal, 1904. UNCIRCULATED.
By Adolph A. Weinman. 70mm (triangular). Obverse: Columbia, standing and facing right, carrying the flag of the United States in a protective stance over an allegory of Louisiana who is removing her French flag; perimeter legend, date below, roundels in each of the three corners augmented by stars; Reverse: Eagle, facing, looking left, with wings spread, escutcheon below with legend, two dolphins and seashell below; roundels in each of the three corners augmented by stars. One of Weinman's early commissions. An umber patina and the "Gold Medal" legend in the escutcheon distinguish this piece from the similar, and more plentiful, bronze medals.
