SWITZERLAND. Swiss Confederation Shooting Festival in Basel White Metal Medal, 1879 PCGS SPECIMEN-64.
R-98c; Martin-62. By Edouard Durussel, Bern. 47mm. Obverse: Arms of Basel in the center, superimposed on crossed rifles and a mixed oak and laurel wreath, legend immediately above and date below; Arms of the (then) 22 Cantons of Switzerland around the perimeter; Reverse: Helvetia, seated, facing three-quarters right, young man with rifle at right, standing and facing left, pointing toward the city of Basel in the background; perimeter legend above, date in exergue below. Note this is essentially a re-used design from the festival three years prior in Lausanne (R-1562), modified for the Basel location. An attractive medal with frosty devices and reflective fields and minimal marks in the soft white metal. Comes with display box from before being certified.
