SWITZERLAND. Basel Cantonal Shooting Festival in Binningen Silver Medal, 1893. PCGS SPECIMEN-62.
R-123a; Martin-74. By Hranz Homberg, Bern, and Karl Jauslin, Muttenz. 45mm. Obverse: Arms of Basel-Landschaft superimposed on a large Swiss cross, surrounded by a mixed wreath of laurel and oak; perimeter legend; Reverse: Wounded 15th century pikeman, on knees, facing right, stone in his right hand, flag in left, perimeter legend. The pikeman is famously preparing to sling the stone at Burkhard VII Münch after the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1444 when Burkhard insulted the field of dead and dying. A very attractive medal, its argent surfaces and darker toned protected areas make the relief detail leap off the surface. To view all items from the PHG Collection click
