R-720a; Martin-400. By Hugues Bovy, Geneva; C. Roch; Alice Bally. 40mm x 60mm. Obverse: Partially-clad female allegory pulling back curtain to view an attack on the city walls by invading Savoyards from outside the city, legend below; Reverse: A view from inside the city of the citizens and soldiers defending and repulsing the attack, legend at left and date of the attack below. This medal design commemorates the 300th anniversary of the so-called "L'Escalade" in which the citizens and soldiers of Geneva repulsed an attack by Charles Emmanuel I and his soldiers on the night of 11 December 1602 - an event still celebrated today. A very attractive medallic example of Art Nouveau - in the plaquette form and the creative eyepoints employed, and with beautiful old cabinet toning.
