SWITZERLAND. Swiss Confederation Shooting Festival in Lucerne Silver Medal, 1853. NGC MS-63.
R-864a; Martin-465. By Johann Baptist Frener, Lucerne. 41mm. Obverse: Four-line legend superimposed on prominent Swiss cross with rays emanating from behind, all enclosed within a mixed oak and laurel wreath; Reverse: Angel, suspended above, offering laurel crown to Arnold Winkelreid who is sacrificing himself on Austrian pikes at the Battle of Sempach, legend in exergue below. An interesting medal that fuses Swiss history and legend together. This attractive example offersa a fresh argent patina with hints of gold and champagne predominantly near the peripheries.
