Obverse: Prominent Swiss cross, with rays emanating and 22 stars (equaling the number of Cantons at the time) encircling the cross atop the rays; perimeter legend; Reverse: Child at right bringing flag to a seated Helvetia at left, with perimeter legend above. On March 1, 1848 (a year of revolutions across Europe), Neuchâtel declared its independence from its Prussian principality status and declared itself a republic within the Swiss Confederation.
