Laureate head right / Soldier standing facing, head left, holding benificiarius standard and bow; date in left field. Rouvier 722. SNG Copenhagen 149 var. (date). Green patina. Very Fine.The object held by the soldier on this rare issue can be readily identified as a benificiarius standard -- a special ceremonial spear that identified the soldier as a benificiarius, part of an officer elite that was tasked with keeping records, accounts, and managing the affairs of the Roman army.
