Republic copper button 8 Escudos (ca.1844), Trelon, Weldon et Weil fabric, KMPnA2, MS64 Red and Brown NGC. A most attractive piece, Gem Uncirculated with red and brown hues and only minute handling marks. Not all the pieces listed in the SCWC are true monetary patterns in the strict sense. The ones listed as KMPnA2 (such as the present piece), PnA3, Pn3, PnA4 and Pn8 are a case in point, despite having been included in the series from early on (Fonrobert lists two such pieces as 9892 and 9893). Rather than patterns for regular coinage, they are buttons or medallic objects, produced in Europe to be used as Botones Gauchescos in South America. Through die-linkage, the present piece can be attributed to the Trelon, Weldon et Weil fabric, who operated from Paris from 1844, and is well known to American collectors of Civil War buttons. This attribution procedure is quite straightforward: the die of the mountains side in the present piece can be linked toPnA4, which in turn can be linked to PnA3 through die-linkage of the coat of arms side; lastly, numerous pieces showing each of PnA3's sides on the obverse can be found with the inscription "PARIS" "T. W. et W." in two lines and a shank attached on the reverse. This pinpoints their origin to the aforementioned fabric, with the shank a tell-tale of its true purpose and nature. An interesting characteristic of these pieces are the fact that the Santiago "So" mintmark in constructed from a big "S" and a small "o", instead of a single punch since the fabric never cared to engrave such a punch. High condition pieces such as the present one are very scarce, and collectable. Classic collections such as Brand and Norweb (Christie's Dallas 11/1985, lot 686) and the recently dispersed Huntington (Morton and Eden 3/2013, lot 82) group included a similar example struck in bronze. Note that the ANS' holdings include examples (correctly classified as buttons) from the T. W. et W. fabric imitating several South American coins: the Paraguayan (ref. 1990.99.199) and Bolivian (ref. 1943.135.5) are the scarcer ones in that very complete group.
