Leiden. Siege Countermark paper Kwart Gulden 1574, Purmer-Le03, XF. An incredible survivor of the 1574 Siege of Leiden by Spanish troops. The Lion countermark of Holland remains clear and despite some expected weakness in the pressing, the devices are remarkably detailed and very well-preserved. These issues using paper cut from prayer books were approved by the city council on 24 December of 1573 and would have circulated until the siege was lifted on 2 October of 1574. Amazingly, this was accomplished by cutting dikes to allow the sea to flood the area so the Dutch could move in reinforcements by ship.
