Historiepenningen - 1858 - Prize medal 'Liedertafel "Kunst en Vriendschap" te Amsterdam' (Zw. -) - Obv. Floating crowned woman between winged boy and girl with text scroll and stage mask, below 'Verschuur & Van der Voort Amsterdam' / Rev. Crowned five-line text and empty field for engraving within a wreath with Amsterdam coat of arms - bronze 50 mm 60,42 gram - good VF - NB An unpublished medal; Zwierzina only mentions issues from 1876. Singing association 'Kunst en Vriendschap' was founded in 1858 by 50 Israelite youngsters. In 1876 she calls herself a 'Liedertafel' and is 'Koninklijk' (Royal). The manufacturers Verschuuur and Van der Voort opened a factory for grinding and engraving semi-precious stones in 1869; it is quite possible that the Jewish engraver Elion, who produced the 1876 medal, worked for this firm. Interesting.
