The larin, also known as "koku ridi" was in use in Kandy from 17th to early part of the 19th century were made by private parties, five of which went to a piece-of-eight, or a Spanish Dollar. The larin was frequently used by the VOC as silver currency and shortage of it caused monetairy problems and the need to produce equivalents in copper (Scho. 1288 & 1295).
