ZENO and Leo Caesar (476/7). Nummus. Constantinople.
Obv: D N ZENO PE AVG.
Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: 'SC Ω E N Λ' (apparently reads: SC ΛEΩN) around Victory advancing left, holding wreath and dragging captive, all within wreath.
Cf. RIC X, 947, with reverse legend DN LEO or similar, in latin letters.
The use of greek letter for the coinage during the time of Leo and Zeno is not so common but it is the case for this coin. For example see RIC X, 963 citing a Nummus from the mint of Constantinople with the mintmark ΠΟΛ or the various Nummi with greek instead of latin monograms.
Apparently unpublished and of great interest.
Condition: Very fine.
Weight: 1,49 g.
Diameter: 12 mm.
