ISLAMIC. The Coinage of Yaman. Rasulids. Al-Muzzafar Shams ad-dîn Yûsuf ibn 'Umar (AH 647-694). Dirham (AH 685). Sa'da.

Extremely rare mint for this reign.

Ex Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger, Auction 421/1541 (2017).

„In 684 H. a Rasûlid army under the command of al-Malik al-Wâthiq Ibrâhîm came to San'â and laid siege to Thulâ. This resulted in a peace treaty with the exchange of hostages. Another consequence was the striking of Rasulid dirhams in Sa'da, the capital of the Zaydi imams, (as well as in al-Jâhilî and Zafâr) and this was regarded as an extraordinary success of Rasulid politics of great historical importance so that it was noted in al-Khazraji's chronicle (ed. Muhammad ibn 'Alî al-Akwa', San'â/Beirut 1403/1983 vol I p. 207): "In this year 685 the happy Muzaffari dirham was struck in the city of Sa'da in the month of Jumâdâ II [25 July-22 August 1286]." The two sides fell apart in the following year."

Condition: Extremely fine.
