Macrinus. AD 217-218. AV Aureus (20.5mm, 6.03 g, 5h). Rome mint, 1st officina. 2nd emission, circa January AD 218. IMP C M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / PONTIF MAX TR P COS P P, Felicitas standing facing, head left, holding long caduceus with her right hand, cradling cornucopia with her left arm. RIC IV 20c; Szaivert Series 6 (citing one specimen); Calicó 2954 corr. (Rome mint); BMCRE 34 note; Biaggi –. Twiced holed, deep cuts and scrapes on both sides, spot of solder. Fine. Extremely rare type.

Following their overthrow, Macrinus and Diademunian were both declared public enemies by the Senate. Though no organized numismatic defacement appears to have been conducted, a personal mutilation of this coin – perhaps by a disgruntled soldier – is not unimaginable.
