Gibraltar. 1 bit. ND (1770-1772). (Prid-19, Dominica). (Km-17.1, Martinica). Ag. Displaying a heart-shaped Type IV countermark cut on a 1 real México 1741 of Philip V. (Cal-517). (Km-75.1). Slabbed by PCGS as AU 50 (Top Pop). This specimen is absolutely the best known specimen according to the PCGS and NGC census. Very rare, even more in this high grade. It is a great opportunity to acquire a specimen that seldom will be offered again in this state of preservation.
This series was originally attributed to Martinique in the numismatic literature, where it still appears in KM, but now according to Bob Lyall, in his research of 2007 and 2008, the series with the heart-shaped bitts have their origin in Gibraltar. Lyall has identified four types; the first two he places in the territory now illegally occupied by Spain (characterised by their rougher shape), while type IV (to which this magnificent coin we offer belongs and which is of firmer workmanship with a serrated border on the inside of the stamp) has a rather dubious origin for him. These coins were first minted in Gibraltar around 1761, where they were withdrawn from circulation, destined for Dominica, between 1762 and 1798, as a document from September 1798 has been preserved and made public by Fred Pridmore, which speaks of these coins circulating on this island. Este ejemplar que presentamos es, con diferencia, el mejor ejemplar conocido según los censos de PCGS y NGC. Muy rara, todavía más en este alto grado. Es una gran oportunidad para para adquirir un ejemplar que rara vez volveremos a ver ofrecido en este estado de conservación. Esta serie fue originalmente atribuida a Martinica en la literatura numismatica, donde todavía aparece en KM, pero ahora Según Bob Lyall, en sus investigaciones de 2007 y 2008, las series con bocado o resello en forma de corazón tienen su origen en Gibraltar.
