Venezuela. Non-adopted trial set of obverse and reverse of 100 Bolivares. Thomas de la Rue, signed and dated 20 October 1950. Paper money on cardboard. The only one known.
American Bank Note Company had been the exclusive banknote printer for the Banco Central de Venezuela since its inception. In fact, almost all the banknotes issued by the private banks since the end of the 19th century had also been printed by the renowned printer.
It was not until 1952 that Thomas de la Rue made his debut in Venezuelan banknote printing with the series of rusticos or orejones. Unfortunately, his debut was rather uneventful, as his original interpretation of Espinoza's Bolívar was rejected by the public, in particular because of the size of the ears of the bust of the Liberator, which gave the series its famous nickname. There was no choice but to withdraw them from circulation and replace them progressively with new issues of the "classic" type designed by the American Bank Note Company.
The experience of the BCV board was not a pleasant one, as it was not until 1960 that Thomas de la Rue was given a new opportunity, this time with much more success than the previous one. To the point that they printed almost all Venezuelan issues until the early 1980s. The importance of this rare proof is that it bears witness to the fact that by 1950 the BCV was already in talks with Thomas de la Rue, who in turn was presenting very different proposals, both in terms of colour and design, from those already being produced by the American Bank Note Company.
In this important set of proofs, we can see the same bust that would be used on the obverse of the 10 Bs of Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, as well as Thomas de la Rue's most emblematic design for Venezuela, the reverse with the Campo Carabobo Monument, which would be used on several issues until the end of the 1990s. American Bank Note Company había sido el impresor exclusivo de billetes del Banco Central de Venezuela desde sus inicios. Inclusive, casi la totalidad del billetes emitidos por los Bancos Privados desde finales finales del siglo XIX, también fueron impresos por la renombrada imprenta.
No sería hasta el año 1952 cuando Thomas de la Rue debutaría en la notafilia venezolana con la serie de los rústicos u orejones. Lamentablemente su debut fue bastante accidentado, ya que su original interpretación del Bolívar de Espinoza fue rechazada por el público, en particular por el tamaño de las orejas del busto del Libertador, esto le dio el famoso apodo a esta serie. No hubo más opción que retirarlos de circulación y sustituirlos progrsivamente por nuevas emisiones del tipo "clásico" diseñadas por American Bank Note Company.
La experiencia del directorio del BCV no devió ser agradable ya que hubo que esperar hasta el año 1960 para darle una nueva oportunidad a Thomas de la Rue, esta veaz con mucho más exito que la anterior. Al punto que imprimieron casi la totalidad de las emisiones venezolanas hasta inicios de los años 80s. La importancia de esta rara prueba es que nos da el testimonio de que ya para el 1950 el BCV se encntraba en conversaciones con Thomas de la Rue, y esta a su vez le presentaba propuestas muy diferentes, tanto en cromática como en diseño, de las que ya venía fabricando American Bank Note Company.
En este importante set de pruebas, podemos ver el mismo busto que se usaria en los orejones del 10 Bs del Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre en el anverso, además del diseño más emblemático de Thomas de la Rue para Venezuela, se trata del reverso con el Monumento del Campo Carabobo, el cual se impondría en las emisiones de varios valores hasta finales de los años 90.
