Egypt - 1 Pound SPECIMEN 1920 Blue on pink and pale green underprint. Temple ruins at left, denomination in Western and Arabic numerals at right. P. 12s.An attractive and pleasing specimen of this popular denomination which features the gate of the temple of Khonsu at Karnak, in Luxor. Typical annotations can be found on the front, they do little to detract from the overall appearance of this rare piece. This bill is signed by Frederick T. Rowlatt who served as governor of the National Bank of Egypt at the time. A key figure in the British colonial administration in Cairo, Rowlett was particularly renowned for converting the Bank of Egypt into an import-export business, deriving its main source of income from granting agricultural loans to residents of the empire rather than issuing new banknotes. Despite this, Rowlatt was actively involved in all the stages of the printing and distribution of new bills and enthusiastically signed every banknote that came out during his tenure. The issue date of this particular note would indicate this to be one of the last specimens prepared with the signatures of the bank governor before he retired in 1921. Very rare PCGS CHOICE AU 58 OPQ
