Germany, Third Reich - 1 Mark Lagergeld n.d. (1933-1936), KONZENTRATIONSLAGER ORANIENBURG Captive plants a tree with a swastika in the background. Back: denomination and authorative signatures.GE-104; Campbell 4039.Briefly after Adolf Hitler's appointment as Reich chancellor in January 1933, the National Socialist German Workers' Party began opening detention centers for political opponents, so-called enemies of the race, homosexuals or dissidents with the NSDAP whom the party leadership would not tolerate. One such a location was Konzenstrationslagers Oranienburg, a former factory, just located North of Berlin, that was originally utilized as a place of confinement for common criminals. Oranienburg would play a pivotal role in the world of concentration camp currency, as it would be the first concentration camp to commission notes specifically issued for its prisoners.
A graphic artist and early prisoner at Oranienburg named Horst-Willi Lippert was assigned to create the design and oversee the printing of the notes. In the early 1920s, Lippert had produced at least 18 issues of Notgeld for his hometown of Rathenow and this experience proved invaluable in getting in getting camp currency issued. The printing blocks he would prepare for the notes were far more intricate than many later examples of such institutions. The treasury of the camp would take very little time from the planning stage to the finished product, however, as Rippert would be released from custody only a few weeks after he submitted his materials, following intervention from his wife.RR Incredibly rare this high grade Since all notes were printed on the cheapest paper available, they were particularly vulnerable to staining and soiling. Considering this fact, the note on offer at Schulman today is in immaculate condition, exhibiting only a few trivial stains which are easily eclipsed by the bright colors as well as the strong technical quality.
