Medina, José Toribio. LAS MONEDAS CHILENAS. MEMORIA PRESENTADA Á LA UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE, EN CONFORMIDAD Á LO DISPUESTO EN EL ARTICULO 22 DE LA LEY DE 9 DE ENERO DE 1879, SOBRE INSTRUCCIÓN SECUNDARIA Y SUPERIOR. Santiago de Chile: Impreso y grabado en casa del Autor, 1902. 4to, contemporary brown quarter morocco with marbled sides; spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; two red morocco spine labels, gilt; mottled endpapers; original printed front card cover bound in; silk marker. cccvii, (1), 238, (2) pages; title printed in red and black; frontispiece portrait; a few text figures; 13 lithographic plates of coins. Minor general wear to binding and pastedowns; tear to card cover and following blank; marginal worming toward rear of volume. Very good or better. An impressive, encyclopedic work of over 500 pages total. Robert I. Nesmith, in his essay in José Toribio Medina, Humanist of the Americas, writes, "In 1902 appeared one of his most important numismatic works, Las Monedas Chilenas, also printed on the author's press. It is an exhaustive treatment of Chilean coinage from the opening of the first mint in Santiago, under Philip V, to the end of the nineteenth century." Sarah Elizabeth Roberts agrees, adding that, "A history of the foundation of the mints in Latin America, biographies of Spanish monarchs during whose reign money was issued, a history of Chile after the revolution began, and biographies of engravers are included. There are 238 pages of documents" (José Toribio Medina, His Life and Works). 300 copies were originally printed, according to Chiappa and Feliú Cruz, a figure that has been echoed by most other bibliographers; this seems high, though it is perhaps the case that copies would be more likely to remain in Chile than with some of Medina's more wide-ranging titles. Regardless, we last offered a copy in 2012. Behar 3517. Burzio Centenario 38. Chiappa 137. Clain-Stefanelli 8601*. Grierson 215. Mateu y Llopis 311. Roberts 151–152. Schaible 115.
