Massachusetts Historical Society. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF MATERIAL FROM THE W.S. APPLETON COLLECTION AT THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Photos taken for Michael Hodder of Bowers & Merena in 1986. Present are: Roll 78: Exposures 6–17, depicting rare colonial coins including the unique 1776 Massachusetts Pine Tree copper, the Ugly Head Washington piece, and Getz pieces; Roll 79: Exposures 1–27 (excepting 9–10), depicting Massachusetts silver, a Higley copper, and several of the medals engraved by Francis F. Stockwell; Roll 80: Exposures 1–26, depicting rare Admiral Vernon medals, cliches of the Diplomatic medal, the Libertas Americana medal, and several Comitia Americana medals; Roll 81: Exposures 1–26, depicting additional Comitia Americana medal, the Franklin Natus Boston medal, and a number of Betts medals; Roll 82: Exposures 1–26, depicting additional Betts and Washington medals, including the Franklin Lightning Averted, Tyranny Repelled medal, a Rhode Island ship medal, and a gold Manly medal; Roll 83: Exposures 1–22, depicting Washington medals, including several funeral medals; Roll 84: Exposures 1–5 and 7: the Betts-510 Happy While United medal, a silver Zachary Taylor medal, and uniface pieces by Bolen and Nini; and Roll 88: Exposures 1–22, depicting Betts medals including a Kittanning Destroyed medal and a German Town medal, along with a Charleston slave hire badge (mechanic). In total, 165 exposures are present, a few of which share a print. Generally fine, with just a couple observed to have problems. Accompanied by photocopies of Michael Hodder's journal recording the pieces photographed. A remarkable group of photographs, taken at the Massachusetts Historical Society by or for Michael Hodder. Copies were sent to both John W. Adams and John J. Ford, Jr., and copies of Hodder's cover letters to both are included. The photographs are of high quality and are generally shot at 2x enlargement.
