Landi, Constanzo. SELECTIORUM NUMISMATUM, PRAECIPUE ROMANORUM, EXPOSITIONES, ELEGANTIBUS NUMMORUM ECTYPIS, & INDICIBUS NECESSARIIS INSTRUCTÆ. Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden): Procudit Baldinus van der Aa, 1695. 4to, somewhat later speckled brown calf; spine with five raised bands, decorated in gilt; red morocco lettering piece, gilt; all page edges speckled red. Finely engraved frontispiece signed by Jan van den Aveele; (16), 164 , (8) pages; title printed in red and black with an engraved vignette; woodcut initials and tailpiece; 45 engraved plates of Roman coins and medals. Front cover detached, but present; contents nearly fine. A revision (with a different title) of Landi's unillustrated In veterum numismatum romanorum, published in 1560. The plates are delightfully engraved, each illustrating one or two Roman coins in a contrived setting of classical antiquities. The frontispiece is a composition of ancient Roman monuments and antiquities with coins being dug up and catalogued by historians. Landi (1521–1564) was a student of Andrea Alciati; John Cunnally (Images of the Illustrious, pages 198–199) discusses how Alciati's humanistic approach to Roman legal studies influenced Landi's approach to Roman numismatic study. Banduri (1719) 18–19. Brückmann 66. Dekesel L27. Hirsch 72. Lipsius 218. Strandberg 95. Van Damme (1807) 826. Ex Kolbe Sale 55, lot 292.
