Persia ND (1890-1923) P-1as PMG Choice UNC 63 1 Toman (Specimen)
Initial denomination from a nearly complete Qajar specimen set offered in this auction. The banknotes of the Imperial Bank of Persia are classic rarities and as a general rule, specimens (particularly of the highest denominations) are seldom available. A most excellent reference for this series was published in 2016. Written by Michael E. Bonine, The Banknotes of the Imperial Bank of Persia is a noteworthy book that details many details of this (the first issue for Persia) and the second issue. The book focuses on the issued notes and unfortunately is rather lacking in its detail on specimens. Several varieties exist for each denomination. This particular example, of the 1 Toman, lacks a printed date but has a serial number range on red on the reverse (all serial numbers for this series are found on the back). A handwritten printer's annotation dates this note to 1905. Strong originality and eye-appeal are seen on this example, which retains fresh color and makes an excellent representative for this popular series. PMG mentions "Printer's annotations; previously mounted".
