Persia ND (1890-1923) P-3s PMG Choice UNC 64 5 Tomans (Specimen)

Surpassed in the PMG population report by just a single finer example, this is a high grade example of the specimen issue for the 5 Tomans from the first series of the Imperial Bank of Persia. The name "Toman", according to Michael E. Bonine in the main reference on the series, The Banknotes of the Imperial Bank of Persia (American Numismatic Society, 2016), traces its origins back to the late thirteenth century, when a monetary united called the Toman was introduced, which was originally said to be divided in 10,000 Dinars. While this specimen lacks an issue date (these were added to the bank shortly before the note would enter circulation), a handwritten annotation dates this specimen to 1911. Strong eye-appeal and originality can be seen, and we are not quite sure why this note did not qualify for the "Exceptional Paper Quality" designation from PMG. Regardless, it is a most excellent representative for this scarce denomination in specimen form. PMG mentions "Printer's annotation".
