Persia ND (1890-1923) P-5s PMG Choice UNC 64 20 Tomans (Specimen)
Payable at Teheran only, this is a fantastic and eye-catching example of the 20 Tomans of the first series of the Imperial Bank of Persia. A handwritten annotation at top left dates this specimen to a 1910 delivery. The first series of the Imperial Bank of Persia has a standardized design, which features the Lion and Sun motif at left and a portrait of Naser al-Din Shah, who was the Sha of Iran from 1848 until his death (by assassination) in 1896. The lion and sun motif can also be found at the center of the back of all denominations. It was the official motif of the royal house and later became the official state symbol. This 20 Tomans specimen, even though it did not receive the "Exceptional Paper Quality" designation from PMG, displays strong originality and colors. Its eye-appeal is fantastic, and with issued notes being extreme rarities (and whenever they are encountered only seen in well circulated grades) this specimen, like the rest of the set on auction today, would make for an excellent representative for the type in an advanced Middle Eastern collection.
