Persia ND (1890-1923) P-6s PMG About UNC 53 25 Tomans (Specimen)

An appealing specimen for this challenging denomination, which was never printed for the second series of the Imperial Bank of Persia. The notes' paper sizes increased with each denomination so the higher the denominations the more impressive the note. The entire first series was printed by the British firm of Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. in England. The product delivered by them included the printed signatures on the front and serial numbers on the back. Upon issue, the main Teheran office of the bank would overstamp the note with a date (in various forms) as well as a "Payable at" stamp (also in various forms) and an official seal from the Persian High Commissioner. This all led to a fairly busy design that covered much of the underprint. Luckily for collectors specimens such as this exist, which display the original design free of stamps and other distractions. This pleasing 25 Toman specimen was mishandled over the years, although we believe the grade assigned by PMG is quite harsh. Printer's annotations include a handwritten date in pen in the top margin, which ties this specimen to a 1919 delivery. Deeply impressed inks are seen on both sides, and the note gives a fresh and original appearance. PMG mentions "Printer's annotation; previously mounted".
