Tunisia 24.2.1942 P-21 PMG Very Fine 25 5000 Francs
A high denomination type from Tunisia, issued in the midst of World War II. Tunisia was a French colony at the time, and like most French-printed banknotes of the time this type was printed on thin paper that did not hold up very well in circulation. Some tears are seen on this example, but the overall eye-appeal is excellent, with strong color on both sides. This type was overprinted on a note for Algeria, as the two colonies were closely related at the time. It was the highest denomination in circulation at the time and represented much purchasing power in Northern Africa when it was issued. The first we have handled of this type and not an issue that is encountered at public auction with any kind of frequency. PMG mentions "Tears".
