Hong Kong Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corp. 100 Dollars 2.1.1934 Pick 176d PMG Very Fine 30. As the Japanese Military advanced from North to South through Asia, currency products were adjusted to meet the new needs of occupied territories. After the Japanese overtook Hong Kong from the British, Army officials forced HSBC officials to hand-sign notes and push them into circulation. These notes, with known serial number ranges, are referred to today as "Duress Notes". For the 100 Dollar denomination, serial numbers B485,001 - B650,000 were issued, under "Duress", by the Japanese. The example offered here, which falls in the known range, has bright colors, good paper, and a manuscript signature at left. Minor repairs are mentioned for accuracy on this otherwise pleasing, rare, and collectible banknote from World War II.
