Caracalla. As Caesar, AD 196-198. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.29 g, 5h). Contemporary imitation. M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF, laureate, draped, and cuirassed(?) bust right / [PRIN]CIP [I]VENT[...], Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt. For a Rome mint issue that seems to be the inspiration (but with different rev. legend) see: RIC IV 16; RSC 597. Fine, lightly toned, scratches and minor deposits. Unusual.

This obverse type is known for both Rome and Laodicea, but the reverse appears to be a mule of the PRINC IVVENT legend, which is blundered on this coin, and the Spes reverse type. The correct legend for the Spes type should be SPEI PERPETVAE. The reverse die is perhaps the product of an unskilled celator at an eastern mint.
