Norodom I gold Restrike Franc 1860-Dated (1899) MS65+ NGC, Phnom-Penh mint, KM-XPn8, Lec-59. 7.33gm. An elusive off-metal type produced from 1897 to 1899 under the supervision of Norodom using Belgian dies dating to 1875. These restrike issues are immediately distinguishable from their original counterparts due to their molten appearance, the result of the dies sitting unused for over two decades. Despite this expected granularity that obscures much of the central devices, this specimen's peripheries remain well-articulated and are further enhanced by gentle silhouetting. Cartwheeling luster solidifies the lofty Gem state of preservation exhibited here, rightfully deserving of the finest grade bestowed to the type across certification companies. Not to go unnoticed by specialized collectors of this off-metal series.
According to Lecompte, although the original strikes are dated to 1860, they were in fact produced by a private workshop in Brussels in 1875. Sometime near the passing of the Queen Mother in 1897, Norodom retrieved the press and dies, allowing for these restrikes to be produced in Phnom-Penh. Lecompte notes that the more undesirable Franc restrikes, deemed as such due to their reduced weight, matte appearance, or granulated texture, were tossed into the crowd during the Queen Mother's cremation ceremony.
