Sinkiang. Turkestan Principal Yuanbao Sycee of 50 Taels ND Certified AU55 by Gong Bo Grading, Cribb-Class XVI.A.111. 98.8x72.7mm. 1818.0gm. Stamped in three sections, reading "Dao Yan" (Circuit Inspector) left and right, the lower stamp and Uyghur Turki inscription (in Arabic letters) "Padshalik Ahmad Zerger" (Smith Ahmad at the Pasha's Office). A variant from the Hubei Ersibao (Class XIII) ingots according to Cribb, but surely can be seen as a class of their own considering the use of multiple languages and how they were cast from a mold with a smaller base, causing them to be thicker and taller. The present offering shows bold stamps and only scattered handling marks. These are attributed to Sinkiang due to the Turkish (Uyghur) inscriptions. Kann states that although silver was rarely seen in circulation in the province (by the 1920's), it was still used in the "Kashgar Taoyin's circuit." Taoyin is the official name on the ingot (Dao Yan), suggesting it's also possible to attribute such pieces to the Kashgar area. Sold with Guardian Auctions flip, Lot 6919.
