Hsüan-t'ung 10 Cents Year 3 (1911) MS68 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y28, L&M-41, Kann-230, WS-0049. A coin whose level of preservation is beyond imagination, having survived more than 100 years in as-struck condition and likely set aside immediately after production, either for presentation or by an early, discerning collector. Regardless of the speculation, so few Chinese coins of any denomination from this era have received similar treatment, garnering significant sums when offered for sale. Exacting in strike, resulting in pristine fields lit ablaze in a cascading luster that serves to illuminate a complete paucity, even under magnification, of anything that would be considered distracting. Of the 1,100+ examples currently submitted to either grading service, the piece at hand, as no surprise to anyone, stands solely atop the field, trailed by a single MS67+ and three MS67s, none of which have been witnessed at auction since a 2012 Heritage offering. With this in mind, expect fervent interest from only the most quality-conscious collectors.
