Li Hung Chang white-metal Medal 1896 AU55 PCGS, cf. L&M-935 (white metal strike unlisted), Wurzbach-5175. 40mm. A challenging medal from the German-produced series commemorating the visit of Chinese politician, general, diplomat, and Viceroy of the Chihli Province Li Hung Chang (Li Hongzhang) to Hamburg. The politician's visit to Hamburg aligned with the domestic modernization efforts for which he is known, as Hamburg boasted Europe's third-largest port in the late 19th century. The effigy of Li Hung Chang and the Hamburg coat of arms are veiled in a heavier metallic patina than the expanses, where crevices transform into constellations of luster when rotated during in-hand inspection. This particular emission has the lowest population compared to the other metal varieties on the PCGS census, the piece at hand being the lone occupant there.
