Chihli. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents Year 23 (1897) MS62 NGC, Pei Yang Arsenal mint, KM-Y64.1, L&M-445. Dragon with triangular eyes. A hugely popular type with a low reported mintage of just 21,000 pieces. The current offering is presently bested by only two specimens by a mere point in the NGC census, and comes with a highly respectable provenance. Practically untoned and presenting barely perceptible softness of strike in the central areas, compensated by the crisply executed legends and sharp rims. Only the second example we have offered in our auctions and by far the nicest; this is a type very rarely encountered in Mint State grades and we anticipate this to become one of the more hotly contested pieces in this sale.
